Each year Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) shines the spotlight on the extraordinary history of Jazz and its importance in American culture. This exhibit consists of ten colorful posters, each focusing on an important figure in the history of Jazz. The Harlem Renaissance Traveling Exhibit consists of several brightly colored images on lightweight satin fabric and includes "Aspects of Negro Life" by Aaron Douglas, as well as poetry by Dubois, Hughes, Hurston, and Johnson, a collage of magazine covers, and a quote from Ralph Ellison.

Acclaimed journalist, historian, and author Bruce Watson will present "Freedom Summer: The Savage Season that Made America Live Up to the Constitution." The contributions made by Civil Rights activists in Mississippi during the summer of 1964 will be the topic of this Constitution Day presentation sponsored by the AIC Honors Program.

Mary Christina Wilson, Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, will speak on "Reading the Arab Spring." Professor Wilson is the author of numerous books and is a specialist on the modern Middle East who serves on the board of directors of the Middle East Studies Association. This event is sponsored by the AIC Honors Program, History Department and International Studies Program and is part of the Springfield Public Forum's Fall 2011 "Forum Thinks" programming.

AIC Theater and Garret Players launch another ambitious leap forward with the staging of "Fame." Working with an adaptation by Christopher Sergel based upon Christopher Gore's screenplay and conceived by David De Silva, the action takes place at The School of Performing Arts in Manhattan during the 1980s. This is a scripted play rather than the musical, film, or television version of "Fame." That said, we intend to add extensive music and dance – all part of a group effort. Fred Sokol directs his ninth presentation since arriving at AIC.
