AIC, in conjunction with the Curtis Blake Center, offers personal supportive services, on a fee basis, to qualified students with learning disabilities who are admitted to the regular College curriculum. The services assist students in managing the academic and social demands of college life. There are two major components to the services we offer:
Students receiving Supportive Learning Services may elect to participate in the program s nationally recognized comprehensive services component, which has been in existence since 1977, and serves more than 100 undergraduates each semester. The program is housed in its own facility and is staffed by a full-time coordinator, assistant coordinator, clerical staff and professional teaching staff of instructional supervisors.
At the heart of Comprehensive Services is regularly scheduled, personal, one-on-one tutoring provided by an instructional supervisor who is a learning disabilities specialist. A student may elect from one to four hours per week of tutoring. In conjunction with the student, the specialist develops an individually tailored program determined by the student s strengths and weaknesses. Priority is given to practical assistance designed to help the student negotiate the on-going demands of the undergraduate curriculum. The specialist also assists the student in selecting and registering for courses, helps organize work and study schedules, and helps determine whatever compensatory aids may be recommended.
In the first semester of the freshman year, students who select this program are strongly urged to take only four courses. Beyond the first semester, a student s course load is chosen according to his or her ability to handle the material. Students receiving these services may, of course, select any course or major for which they meet the academic requirements.
The belief on which this program was founded - that learning disabled individuals can compensate for their difficulties and meet with success in the college environment - has been amply corroborated in the two decades that SLS has been in existence.
