Academic Mentor

JOB DESCRIPTION:

American International College is a private, coeducational institution of higher education located on a 60+ acre campus in Springfield, Massachusetts. Founded in 1885, the College has 3500 graduate and undergraduate students. AIC offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs through the Schools of Business, Arts and Sciences; Health Sciences; and Graduate and Adult Education. Under the direction of the Director of the ACE Program, the Academic Mentor will serve as academic and personal counselor for students participating in the SSS Project.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assist with the AIC 101 course/classroom for first year SSSP students
  • Meet bi-weekly with assigned students, or more frequently as needed
  • Monitor studentsí academic performance and college adjustment
  • Assist students with all program and college paperwork
  • Keep and enter up-to-date logs of student contact
  • Assist with other ACE workshops, cultural events, or community service projects
  • Send, receive and review progress reports with all students
  • Promote grants, scholarships, and all other financial aid resources
  • Exhibit professionalism toward students, team-members staff and faculty
  • Others duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's preferred; Associates Degree with three years direct experience working with first generation/low income students.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working with low-income, first generation, or disabled students in need of academic assistance.
  • Demonstrated motivation, interest, and enthusiasm for students needing academic services
  • Strong motivator with a comfort level working in a group environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organization skills.
  • Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet and internet applications.
  • A team player and provide team leadership for special projects.
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred.

WORK HOURS/SCHEDULE:

The Academic Mentor is a part-time, nine-month, non-exempt position. Normal office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with non-paid lunch break, flexible to the needs of the department. This is a non-benefit eligible position. This is a grant funded position which is contingent upon available funding and academic year contract. Tuition benefits are not included in the benefit package.
