Judges are comprised of American International College's faculty and administration who volunteer to participate in the program.
Admittedly there is always some subjectivity when judging however for the most part, you will find the criteria comprises critical areas. Judges rotate from room to room, compare notes and the end of the Congress each judge comprises a list of top delegates.
The Outstanding Delegation award will be judged on similar criteria. However, the judging will also focus on how well a team (working to support their legislation) involves all its students. The winning delegation will receive two free delegate registrations to the next Model Congress.
Professor Paul C. Desmarais
A professor of mathematics and chair of the math department at American International College, has served as a model congress judge for 10 years. It is the judge coordinator's responsibility to recruit faculty and administration and then train them on judging procedures. Professor Desmarais received his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from the University of Massachusetts.
The following is criteria which the judges are directed to base their critque of each delegate's presentation upon.
We wish to maintain the academic integrity of the Model Congress. Dress for men should consist of a jacket and tie in all instances. Ties should not be loosened or undone in session and if jackets are removed due to comfort, the delegate should have on a long sleeved well-ironed shirt. Jeans and sneakers are not acceptable. Slacks and dress shoes should be worn. Women are expected to dress conservatively. Dress pants are acceptable or professional skirts of modest length. Blouses and dress tops should also be of a modest fashion. As with men, sneakers are inappropriate and dress shoes should be worn.
While the Model Congress is an atmosphere where free speech is promoted, respect for your fellow delegates is required. Students should refrain from making derogatory comments and expressions if they wish to remain in the session. While not in session, students should maintain a high level of maturity and discipline. For the most part, we will look for the advisors to enforce these rules on their students. However, the judges and chairs will also receive a copy of this notice. Judges will be asked to deduct points for students not abiding by these rules and chairs may remove students for gross infraction. If you have any questions what so ever please contact us because gross infractions as mentioned may result in a student being immediately removed.
The following are general criteria that Model Congress judges look for during the course of debate:
