Chris Mercurio, Director of Recreation at American International College, won this year's Hansen Invitational Miniature Golf Tournament at the steamy Fenway Golf Course in Springfield.
Mercurio, in accepting the green jacket, said "I have been at AIC for seven years, and right from the beginning I heard of this prestigious tournament. This is a dream come true to win the Hansen. Some day I'll tell my grandkids about this. I'm getting teary-eyed just thinking that I beat this outstanding field to win the tournament."
Mercurio had to overtake a fast-starting Paul Quinlan to win the tournament. Quinlan, who shot a blazing 20 on the front nine, faded on the back nine. "Someone in my group, who shall remain nameless, started talking about Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck. That threw me off, I completely lost my focus after that. The heat got to me too. Being the senior competitor, I should have had a caddy."
Rich O'Connor fought back from a dismal performance in 2009 to shoot a 49. "I'm starting to transfer the competitive skills I've learned from the Indians to other walks of life. It felt good to shoot a 49. By the way, did anyone leave any soda cans?"
Hansen, overseeing his 10th tournament, was pleased with the results, although he had to leave early to tend to his dogs. "This is a great event, and it was wonderful to see so many people here. The tournament continues to grow, and plans have started already to make next year's tournament bigger and better," he said.
