Healthy eating habits are important for Olympic athletes, but just as important for college students. That's the message that Olympic dietician Jillian Wanik will be bringing to students at American International College. Wanik will be speaking to AIC students Thursday, February 28 at 7:00 p.m. in the Griswold Theatre.
Wanik will provide students with accurate, up-to-date information on how to assess and improve their nutrition and diet.
As a Dietitian for ARAMARK Higher Education, Jillian is responsible for coordinating menu planning and special diets for student athletes and students with allergies at ARAMARK's Northeast college and university accounts. She provides nutrition communications, education, and team counseling.
Wanik was part of the 2004, 2008 and 2012 ARAMARK Olympic teams, working with culinary professionals to create performance-based Olympic menus. Her team was responsible for the maintenance and posting of nutritional information for all food items served during the London Olympic Games, which featured a menu comprised of more than 1,500 items for 25,000 athletes, coaches, officials, and Games personnel. She provided elite athletes with sport specific nutrition recommendations to help them achieve their optimal performance.
Wanik said her primary role at the Olympics was to provide nutritional guidance and assistance to the athletes, teams and coaches. "We also work closely with the ARAMARK chefs and culinary teams on menu items, recipe ingredients and nutritional analysis. Nutrition information (including serving sizes, nutrient analyses and allergen labeling) for each dish must be made available at point of service in the official languages of the Olympics to make sure athletes can maintain their diet regimens," she said.
"Nutrition is important on many levels, as it affects both academic and athletic performance and is one of the foundations of personal good health," she said.
Wanik is a Registered Dietitian, a certified Nutrition Support Dietitian, a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics and a Certified Dietitian/Nutritionist. She is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, certified by the State of Connecticut, a member of the Sports and Cardiovascular and Wellness dietitians practice group and Dietitians in Nutrition Support.
