Thompson named new Dean of Health Sciences

American International College has named Dr. Cesarina Thompson as the new dean of the School of Health Sciences. The announcement was made recently by AIC President Vince M. Maniaci.

Thompson will begin her duties at AIC July 1, following the retirement of current dean Dr. Carol Jobe.

Thompson has more than 25 years of teaching and administrative experience in higher education and currently serves as the Interim Associate Dean of the School of Health & Human Services and Professor of Nursing at Southern Connecticut State University. Prior to her current position, Dr. Thompson served as Chairperson of the Department of Nursing at Southern for 13 years during which time she facilitated innovative program development at the undergraduate and graduate levels to meet workforce and professional needs.

She has been the recipient of numerous internal and external grants to support program development and expansion. Most recently, Dr. Thompson played a key role in the development and approval of a unique, inter-institutional doctoral program to prepare future nurse educators. She is nationally recognized as a leader in nursing education and was inducted as a Fellow in the National League for Nursing’s Academy of Nursing Education for her research and scholarly activities focusing on advancing nursing education, particularly in the areas of effective teaching strategies for traditional, adult and culturally diverse students in nursing, program assessment and evaluation, and academic leadership. She also was recognized by New Haven Business Times as one of 20 Noteworthy Women for her leadership activities in advancing nursing education.

Dr. Thompson has served on several national task forces focusing on nursing education issues, delivered presentations at national and international conferences, and authored journal articles and book chapters related to nursing education and academic leadership. Her professional contributions include having served as the Chairperson of the Connecticut League for Nursing Council of Deans & Directors, a group consisting of program heads from all levels of nursing education, and membership on the Board of Directors of Griffin Health Services Corporation. Dr. Thompson regularly serves as team leader for the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, the national accrediting body for baccalaureate and higher degree nursing programs, and is active in state-wide professional organizations. Additionally, she has been a manuscript reviewer for professional nursing journals and grant reviewer for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the NLN.

She received a Ph.D. in Adult Education and a M.S. in Nursing from the University of Connecticut and a BSN from the University of Bridgeport.
