Program Overview

The Division of Physical Therapy of the School of Health Sciences confers an entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree that reflects the scope and depth of the practice of physical therapy in today’s health care system. The program consists of six years of study, three at the undergraduate level and three at the graduate level (the professional phase). The undergraduate phase consists of a series if prerequisite and general education courses for a total of 90 credits. The three-year professional phase encompasses academic, clinical and research experiences for a total of 114 credits.

The Doctor of Physical Therapy Program educates students to practice autonomously and ethically in a multifaceted and culturally diverse health care environment. The graduates will continue to meet the health needs of society through continued life-long professional service and development.

In concert with the mission of the college, the program in physical therapy facilitates a teaching-learning environment through interactive and collaborative learning experiences. Students demonstrate cognitive, psychomotor, and professional skills that enable them to assume the diverse role of health care practitioner, which includes clinician, advocate, manager, teacher, learner, and researcher.

The Health Science Complex houses the Division of Physical Therapy. This spacious site includes three large teaching laboratories with state of the art equipment, a computer lab, an amphitheater with extensive multi-media capabilities, a student lounge and multiple classrooms.

The Doctor of Physical Therapy Program is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education of the American Physical Therapy Association. Graduates are eligible to apply for licensure to practice physical therapy in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
