All undergraduates seeking teacher licensure must complete both an arts & sciences major at the college (e.g. Liberal Studies, English, Math, History, etc.) and a major in education.
To become an education major, students must take and pass the first part of the MTEL (Mass. Tests for educator licensure) - the literacy and communication portions, have a GPA greather than 2.67, submit an application and two letters of recommendation. However, students may enroll in education courses prior to becoming an education major. In addition, three courses in psychology are required: PSY 101, PSY 301, and either PSY 208 or 309.
Prior to student teaching, the student must be fully accepted into the education program and must pass the subject area portion(s) of the mtel (e.g. General curriculum test and foundations of reading test for elementary, biology test for biology). A portfolio is due at the conclusion of student teaching organized around the five "professional standards for teachers". All students, regardless of their home state of residence, must fulfill the massachusetts requirements for licensure.
