PT students present research at Boston conference

Michael Letourneau and Amy DiSanto

SPRINGFIELD--Four physical therapy students from American International College in Springfield, Mass., were invited to present at a conference in Boston recently. Amy Disanto of Milford, Mass., and Michael Letourneau of Warwick, R.I., attended the Sixth International Scientific Conference on Prevention of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (PREMUS). Kaitlin Riggs of Pawtucket, R.I., and Marina Leonovich of Greenfield, Mass., also worked on the project.

PREMUS is an international scientific conference that serves as a forum for work-related musculoskeletal health research with an emphasis on prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The participants include international experts in the field, such as scientists, practitioners in occupational health and safety, ergonomists, economists, industrial engineers, and policy makers. The goal of PREMUS is to present and discuss the latest research.

The students presented the findings of a research project they worked on at HASBRO Games in East Longmeadow, Mass., involving the use of an insole program within a manufacturing work environment.

The findings demonstrated a reduction in muscle activity in the Tibialis Anterior and Medial Gastrocnemius muscle groups and perceived level of discomfort with the use of insoles while standing and working in the manufacturing environment.

The employees agreed that the company’s year old shoe insole program was helping with daily aches and pains while working on the factory concrete floors.
