SPRINGFIELD—Richard B. Holzman, Ed.D. of Chester, has been named Dean of Special Academic Projects at American International College in Springfield. Holzman, the former superintendent of schools in Ware, has been Director of the AIC School Administration Program. The announcement was made recently by Gregory T. Schmutte, Vice President of Academic Affairs at AIC.
In his new position, Holzman will be responsible for innovative academic initiatives such as the Early College Program for high school students, new graduate programs, the expansion of academic and cultural programs in the region and abroad as well as leadership in AIC's highly successful Extended Campus Programs.
He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y. He received his Ed.D. in School Administration from UMass Amherst.
Prior to becoming superintendent of schools in Ware in 2003, Holzman spent more than 30 years as a school superintendent in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts, including Schenectady, N.Y. and Teaneck and Middletown, N.J. and the American International School in Caracas, Venezuela.
Holzman has received numerous awards and recognitions including "The Executive Educator 100" where he was named one of the 100 outstanding school executives in North America by the National School Boards Association's Executive Educator magazine (1986). He has also served as a member of the Advisory Panel on the Arts in Education of the National Endowment for the Arts.
As one of the first Peace Corps volunteers, Holzman served in the Philippines with recognition from President John F. Kennedy. In 1981 he was a Fulbright Scholar on a mutual exchange in the Republic of China.
