High school students shadow workers at AIC

SPRINGFIELD--Punxsutawney Phil may not see his shadow on Groundhog Day, but on Friday, February 1, workers at American International College had plenty of shadows. As part of the 11th Annual National Job Shadow Day, students, from Springfield's Central High School, spent the morning learning what AIC workers do.

Job shadowing is a yearlong national effort to enrich the lives of students by acquainting them with the world of work through on-the-job experiences and a carefully crafted school curriculum that ties academics to the workplace. The effort helps young people understand how what they learn in the classroom leads to success in the workplace. National job shadowing is a coordinated effort of Junior Achievement, America’s Promise - The Alliance for Youth, the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Labor. National partners include the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE).

George Morgan, Americorps VISTA volunteer coordinator at AIC, said the high school students will shadow AIC employees in several locations including the admissions office, registrar's office, library, radio station, public relations office, business office and student activities.

"Many high school students are already thinking about possible careers," Morgan said. "By shadowing some of our employees at work, they may find a vocation that really interests them."

"Our objectives for this job shadowing experience is to demonstrate the connection between academics and careers, introducing the students to the requirements of professions and industries to better prepare them for the workforce, to demonstrate to the students how English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science and work-readiness skills are used everyday at work and showing the students how lifelong learning is important and relevant to continued success in the workplace," he added.
