AIC steps up to help Red Cross

SPRINGFIELD-- Members of the AIC community stepped up big time last week, donating 33 pints of blood during the Red Cross Blood Drive on Thursday, April 17.

Janet Tierney, an account executive from the American Red Cross, was pleased with the turnout. "The drive did pretty well, much better than I had hoped. We had 42 presenting donors, nine deferrals, and we collected 33. Our goal was 40, but I’m very happy with the 33 pints of blood," she said.

Tierney said the Spring blood drives usually don't attract as many donors as the Fall drives. "Our busiest is the first drive in October, then December, and I think these both benefit from the community service credits, though we did give out Patriots tee shirts in December. February is the slowest," she said.

George Morgan, Americorps VISTA volunteer coordinator at AIC, said people who couldn't donate still helped out. "Students who were not able to donate blood volunteered their time to assist American Red Cross employees with the distribution of refreshments and registering potential donors. These blood drives are successful events that display civic engagement, leadership and a collective effort for a good cause," he said.

The Red Cross wanted to thank the AIC family for its efforts. "In the four AIC drives this year, we had 228 folks come to donate blood. After deferrals, we collected 177 pints of blood, which is excellent," Tierney said.

"When each pint is separated into its components, the AIC drives have made over 500 units of blood products available to patients in need. Everyone should be proud of this achievement and you in particular George, because you worked very hard on these drives, and you were instrumental in their success. Thanks so much," she said.
