This department offers the major and minor in Spanish plus coursework in other languages. The offering of languages beyond Spanish may vary according to student interest and is open to student request. Current offerings include French, German, Italian, Swahili, and American Sign Language. Anticipated future offerings include Arabic, Russian, and modern Greek. Classical Latin and Greek are also available. Students intending to teach Spanish in secondary schools must have two majors (Spanish and Secondary Education) and work with advisors in each field.Reflecting the importance of competency in foreign languages and the cultural knowledge that accompanies the study of foreign language for any student preparing for engagement in today’s global society, the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences shortly after the completion of each semester issues a special Dean’s List “With Foreign Language Commendation” to recognize those students who have earned the honor of attaining inclusion on the Dean’s List while also taking at least one course in foreign language study during the same term.
