Report on Teacher Preparation Programs 2006-2007

The Education Department of American International College has developed two programs to further the professional development of educational practitioners today. These programs are as follows:
- Specialized graduate programs to prepare licensed educators for new roles such as reading specialist, administrator, or special education teacher.
- Programs that build upon a candidate's present skills to provide professional development for a new role as an educator with initial teaching licensure.
In addition to providing for the educational needs of individuals presently in education, the School provides licensure programs in the areas of early childhood, elementary, middle, secondary, and special education for holders of appropriate Bachelor's degrees who now wish to become teachers.
Students are required to submit documentation of successful completion of Parts I and II of the Massachusetts Communication and Literacy Skills Test from the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) before being accepted into the graduate program leading to licensure.
The successful completion of the appropriate Subject Matter Knowledge test(s) (MTEL Part III) is required for all candidates prior to placement in the student teaching practicum or Apprenticeship.
All courses designated 300 or above may be taken for graduate credit. Graduate students in 300 level courses will have additional course requirements since these courses may include undergraduate seniors.
All programs are based upon a core of requirements, elective options, and a culminating experience that involves the actual implementation of the student's new skills in an appropriate educational setting. Work in the field is an integral part of AIC's education programs and reflects our belief that valuable knowledge can be gained not only through course work but through the expertise provided by practitioners in the schools.
Throughout the education program, students are guided in the development of a cumulative program portfolio based on Massachusetts State professional standards. The portfolio is required for program completion and initial licensure eligibility.
