Major Requirements

All Biochemistry and Chemistry majors must complete the Required Chemistry Core, the Required Flexible Core, and the Required Courses in Allied Fields as indicated.

Required Chemistry Core:

Students who wish to prepare for graduate studies in Chemistry should include in their curriculum where possible: CHE 321, 323 and MAT 303.

Students who wish a concentration in biochemistry should take CHE 337 and 337L, 338 and 338L, 342 and at least two semesters of Biology from: BIO 305, BIO 349, BIO 331. Chemistry majors preparing for careers in the health professions should take CHE 337.

Students who wish to pursue a major which conforms to suggested ACS guidelines should include CHEM 321 and 321L and at least two additional credits of laboratory beyond the core requirements.

Freshmen planning to major in Chemistry are advised to enroll in CHE 211, and Math 140 or 207.  Early consultation with the chairperson of the department is advised.  Chemistry majors wishing to meet requirements for medical or dental school admission should also consult with the pre-medical advisor regarding that phase of their program.

Freshmen are strongly advised to take CHE 211 and 211L; 212 and 212L; and Mathematics courses chosen in accordance with their degree needs and background.  This freshman program is appropriate whether the student decides to major in biochemistry, chemistry, or biology.  Students planning careers in medicine are advised to take BIO 206 in their freshman year.
