What are the reasons for majoring in Management?
The Management program at AIC provides students with the tools required for a successful management career in private industry, government, or the non-profit sector. Courses and internships are designed to be consistent with AIC’s primary mission as a teaching-learning institution, committed to giving students an international perspective, appreciation of cultural diversity, awareness of social and ethical issues, ability to think logically and critically, and communicate effectively. Also consistent with the college’s overall mission, the Management Department prepares students for entry to careers in management as well as for advanced study in professional graduate degree programs.
What subject matter and courses are offered in the Management Department?
Major areas of study within the Department include leadership, teamwork, motivation, organizational design, diversity, e-commerce, entrepreneurship, operations research, strategic planning, process improvement and statistical process control. Building the skill sets essential for analyzing and resolving contemporary business issues depends in large part on the ability to translate theory to real world practice – to see how concepts and principles developed in the classroom can be put into action. Accordingly, all course work contains extensive hands-on application through group work, case studies, guest lectures and site visits, special research projects, simulations and role plays.
What role do internships play in management education?
Given the practical orientation of management programs at AIC, all majors are required to complete an internship for at least 3 credits. The Department maintains contact with a wide range of organizations. Management majors intern at major firms like Merrill Lynch, Lego Systems, and United Technologies. They also work with smaller firms and with non-profit organizations in areas such as health care, and with governments at the local, state, and federal levels.
What about the social responsibility of business?
Management education at AIC takes seriously the responsibility that business has to society and the key role of managers in allocating society’s resources among competing needs. Business Ethics and Leadership are required courses for all majors. In these courses students complete a group project in community service where they learn by working on a specific program to help others.
What careers are open to management majors?
Corporations and graduate schools continue to emphasize the importance of recruiting students who are well prepared for today’s progressive business environment through a dynamic mix of technical and interpersonal skills. The Department of Management is committed to responding aggressively to the evolving needs of employers and that AIC graduates have what it takes to succeed in today’s highly competitive marketplace. For this reason, almost all graduates have secured a permanent position or have enrolled in a full time graduate program within three months of completing their studies.
