Reading (M.Ed.)
M.Ed. or C.A.G.S. in Reading with Initial Licensure
Program Objectives
This program is
designed for educators who possess an initial teaching license and wish to
pursue initial licensure as a specialist reading teacher at all grade levels.
Prerequisites
- An initial or profession teaching license.
- An introductory reading course.
- A children's literature course.
- Minimum cumulative average of 2.67 in the Baccalaureate Degree Program.
- Completed graduate admission application and three letters of reference.
- Personal interview and evaluation of previous coursework.
- All graduate candidates seeking Mass. Licensure must pass the Communication
and Literacy Skills portion of the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure
(MTEL) exam, before formal acceptance to the degree program.
*Note: All candidates are welcome to take up to nine credits of graduate
coursework prior to formal acceptance into the degree program.

- EDC 403 - Advanced Developmental Reading (3)
- EDC 444 - Organization, Administration, and Supervision of Reading Programs
in Elementary and Secondary Schools (3)
- EDC 485 - Advanced Analysis of Reading and Language Arts (3)
- EDC 498 - Specialized Practices in Reading (3)
- EDC 547 - Children's and Adolescent Literature (3)
- EDC 565 - Speech and Laungage Development (3)
- EDC 487 - Clinical Practicum as a Teacher of Reading and Language Arts
(3) OR
- EDC 511 - Apprenticeship in Education (6) Important Note: Prior to the
Clinical Practicum or Apprenticeship in Education, the candidate must pass the
Reading Specialist subject matter portion of the MTEL
- Electives - 6-9 credits
- The candidate must successfully complete a program portfolio organized
around the state professional teaching standards as a culminating
activity
Total Credits: 30
Note: There is a 10 year limit for completion of degree requirements
including transfer courses requested.
