Early Childhood Education (M.Ed.)
M.Ed. - Early Childhood Education with Initial Licensure
Program Objectives
This program is designed for those
with a baccalaureate degree seeking initial licensure to teach PreK through 2.
Prerequisites
- An earned Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Courses should
include work in
- English Composition and literature
- College mathematics
- Laboratory sciences
- The Arts
- Health and physical education
- History and other social studies
- Introduction to psychology
- Developmental psychology (or an appropriate psychology)
- Minimum cumulative average of 2.67 in the Baccalaureate Degree Program.
- Completed graduate admission application and three letters of reference.
- Personal interview and evaluation of undergraduate transcript.
- All graduate students are required to demonstrate successful completion and
a passing score on the Communication and Literacy skills section of the
Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL), or comparable state teacher
exam, before formal acceptance into the degree program.
Note: All candidates are welcome to take up to nine credits of graduate
coursework prior to formal acceptance into the degree program.

- EDC 400* - The Reflective Practitioner (3 Credits)
- EDC 550 - Introduction to Special Education (3 Credits)
- EDC 508* - Teaching of Mathematics (3 Credits)
- EDC 516* - Teaching of Reading and Language Arts (3 Credits)
- EDC 402 - Multisensory Teaching of Language Skills
- EDC 595 - Assessment and Curriculum for Early Childhood and Special
Education
- EDC 439B - Student Teaching: Early Childhood 300 hrs. (6 Credits)
- EDC 446 - Education Seminar (1-3 Credits)
* Field Experience Required
(75 hours total)
Note: The candidate must pass the appropriate Subject Matter portion of the
MTEL to be eligible for Student Teaching.With the above, the candidate must
successfully complete a program portfolio to be eligible for licensure at the
Initial Level.
Additional Courses Required for Master's
Degree (6 Credits)
- EDC 354 - Classroom Assessment (3 Credits) or one 3-credit elective.
- One 3-credit
- Elective Masters Degree Total (30 Credits) Note: There is a 10 year limit
for completion of degree requirements including transfer courses
requested.
