Special Education (M.Ed.)
Program Objectives
This program is designed for those with a baccalaureate degree seeking Initial licensure to teach students with moderate disabilities in grades PreK-8 or 5-12.
Prerequisites
1. An earned Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and a review of the transcript. Courses should include work in
- English Composition and literature
- Elementary mathematics
- Science
- The Arts
- Health and physical education
- History and other social studies
- Introduction to psychology
- Developmental psychology (or an appropriate psychology)
2. Minimum cumulative average of 2.67 in the Baccalaureate Degree Program.
3. Completed graduate admission application and three letters of reference.
4. Personal interview and evaluation of undergraduate transcript.
5. All graduate students are required to demonstrate successful completion and a passing score on the Communication and Literacy Skills section of the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) before formal acceptance into the degree program.
*Note: All candidates are welcome to take up to nine credits of graduate coursework prior to formal acceptance into the degree program.

- EDC 400* - The Reflective Practitioner (3 Credits) PreK-8 and 5-12 -OR- EDC 402* - Multisensory Teaching of Language Skills (3 Credits) PreK-8 and 5-12.
- EDC 521* - Introduction to Special Education (3 Credits)
- EDC 508* - Teaching of Mathematics (3 Credits)
- EDC 516* - Teaching of Reading (PreK-8) (3 Credits) -OR- EDC 520* - Reading and Communication in the Middle and Secondary Schools 5-12 (3 Credits)
- EDC 549 - Developing the Individual Education Plan (1 Credit) PreK-8 and 5-12
- EDC 565 - Speech and Language Development (3 Credits) PreK-8 and 5-12
- EDC 406 - Assessment, Methods, and Materials for Teaching Special Education (3 Credits) PreK-8 and 5-12
(Note: The candidate must pass the appropriate subject matter sections of the MTEL to become eligible for student teaching or internship.) - EDC 439/C - Student Teaching (6 Credits) -OR- EDC 511 - Apprenticeship in Special Education (6 Credits)
* Special Education Field Experience Required
With the above, the candidate must successfully complete a program portfolio to be eligible for licensure at the Initial level.
Additional Courses Required for Master's Degree (6 Credits)
- EDC 554 - Classroom Assessment (3 Credits)
- One 3-credit Elective
Total: 30 Credits Note: There is a 7 year limit for completion of degree requirements including transfer courses requested.
