Information for Parents

Welcome to the Dexter Counseling Center's website at American International College. We understand your wish for your son or daughter to optimize their educational experience at AIC. Toward that goal our mission is to assist in the learning process and help each student overcome unexpected obstacles to achievement. We invite you to explore this website to learn more about the services we offer through the counseling center and to feel free to contact us by telephone or in person. We are happy to answer any questions you may have about the services we provide, to hear your concerns about your son/daughter, or to assist you in securing needed services in the community. You also may find some of our resource links to be helpful.

Confidentiality is an essential ingredient in the development of an effective counseling relationship. Laws on confidentiality generally prohibit us from sharing any information gained through, or about, our contacts with students unless the student has given us written permission to do so, or if we have reason to believe the student is imminently dangerous to him/herself or directly to others. However, confidentiality laws do not prohibit our counselors from discussing ways that parents can be generally helpful or supportive in their interactions with their sons/daughters.

There are a number of books about families who are experiencing the college years for the first time. Some parents have found the following book to be helpful:

Don't Tell Me What To Do, Just Send Money: The Essential Parenting Guide To The College Years, by Helen Johnson, Chrisine Schelher-Miller and Christine Schelher-Miller.
