The Fabulous 413 – January 22, 2024: Renewed (google.com)

It’s in a familiar set of octogenarians finding a new home that might invite more folx to their number. American International College has made the Young at Heart Chorus an artist-in-residence, meaning that the singers have a new home in Springfield, a new student body to interact with, and a new community to bring into their fold. We head over to their rehearsal to speak with Frank Borelli, director of Arts, Media, and Design at AIC, about bringing the choral body to the campus, co-director Julia van IJken about joining the creative leadership, and with several members of the chorus about what this move can mean for their participation in the group.

David Evans, finance chief at The Republican, retires; Gretchen Halasi-Kun named chief administrative officer 

The Republican’s business office is saying farewell to David Evans, a man who guided the publication’s finances through years of industry upheaval. Evans joined The Republican as assistant controller in 1988, becoming treasurer and controller in 1991. His undergraduate degree in accounting is from Penn State University, and he earned a master’s degree in business administration from American International College.

It has been a dramatic last 48 hours for the United States after an enemy drone launched a strike against the Tower 22 desert base in Jordan, which took the lives of three service members and wounded several others. Like the U.S. government, Gary Lefort, a retired professor of international business at American International College, blames the strike on Iran.

The Springfield Rotary Club presented Frank Colaccino with the Paul Harris Award on Jan. 25 at the Student Prince Restaurant in Springfield. Colaccino, founder and president of the Colvest Group, earned a Paul Harris Award for years of outstanding service to the Springfield community and to the Rotary Club. In addition to his service and contributions to JGS Lifecare and American International College, for over 13 years Colaccino has chaired the Service Above Self Luncheon at the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Former military expert discusses recent Jordan drone strike killing 3 Americans 

President Biden said that the U.S. “shall respond” after those three American troops were killed and at least 34 more were injured in an overnight drone strike at a U.S. base in northeast Jordan. Gary LeFort is a retired professor at AIC and a retired U.S. Army officer who tells 22News the attacks are directed at the U.S. because it supports Israel.

The air crackled with excitement as CES MMA threw down the gauntlet for a knockout evening slated for February 23 at the grandiose Foxwoods Resort Casino. Topping the bill is CES MMA Middleweight World Champ, Gary “Batman” Balletto Jr., who is gearing up to clinch a world title in another division when he goes against Pat “The Gorilla Ninja” Casey. “We’re a couple of jacks-of-all-trades,” Casey chimed in, reminiscing about his gridiron days at American International College before jumping into the MMA ring.

Pete Morris, Brick educator and former sports star, dies 

A celebration of life will be held Thursday (Jan. 25) to mark the passing of Peter R. Morris, a former Brick Township High School standout athlete and later an educator who died Saturday. He was 56. Morris continued his hockey career at American International College in Massachusetts. Then an NCAA Division III program, his career marked the revitalization of the program that culminated with a conference championship in his final year.

Brick Schools Transportation Director Pete Morris Mourned 

Brick Township NJ school buses were adorned with black ribbons on Monday as the school district joined family and friends in mourning Peter Morris, the director of transportation for the Brick Township Schools, who died Saturday evening at 56. Morris played hockey in college at American International College and was captain of the school’s national champion team in 1990, while also earning degrees in history and education.

East alumni share college tips with seniors 

Returning 2023 graduates of Cranston East High School converged in the library last week to offer their words of wisdom along with cookies and cocoa to outgoing seniors. A freshman at American International College, Damon Asencio said “Surround yourself with people that want the same as you, don’t hang out with people that want to party all the time if you want to be a doctor or don’t hang out with people that want to do dumb things if you’re actually looking to accomplish your goals.”

American International College continues the rebuild of the destroyed science hub 

In an update to a fire that destroyed the hub for health science students at American International College this past summer, the head of academic affairs says they expect students won’t be back in Courniotes Hall for another 18 to 24 months. To mitigate the consequences of this, they’ve continued their partnership with UMass, so those students will still be able to use laboratories and some temporary places on AIC’s campus.

MGM Springfield and the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority turned on 1,000 square feet of outdoor video board Thursday evening at the MassMutual Center, a $3 million upgrade to the arena’s Main Street facade. Springfield Mayor Domenic J. On Dec. 11, the American International College baseball team delivered 4,000 pounds of food and $500 worth of diapers, collected through their annual Homerun 4 the Hungry food drive, to Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen in Chicopee and Square One in Springfield. San Diego Gulls Sign Michal Stinil to Professional Tryout

The San Diego Gulls have announced that the American Hockey League (AHL) club has signed forward Michal Stinil to a professional tryout (PTO). The 5-11, 194-pound forward appeared in 18 career NCAA games with American International College from 2020-22, helping AIC win the Atlantic Hockey Association championship in 2020-21.

Watson is a former student-athlete himself, a football player from American International College.

Holyoke Community College and Springfield Technical Community College are two-year institutions without on-campus housing. They’ve struck a deal with American International College to house students who want to live in a dormitory at AIC.

John Gibbons, the First Black United States Marshal of Massachusetts, Passes Away 

John Gibbons, the first African American United States Marshal of Massachusetts, has passed away. Gibbons was a graduate of American International College (AIC) and went on to have an illustrious career in law enforcement. He received his undergraduate degree from the institution in 1977, a Master of Education in 1986, and was bestowed with an honorary doctorate in 2011. While attending AIC, he was an exceptional football player for the school’s team the Yellowjackets, and was inducted into their Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022.

On Wednesday, January 18, the opening day of the spring semester, Woody, the on-campus therapy dog at AIC, visited the admissions office. Before the pandemic even started, he started going to administrative offices.
