Hampshire Mall in Hadley is set to be on the foreclosure auction block at a time when many area malls are changing. Just last week, a new buyer expressed interest in buying and giving a facelift to the Enfield Square Mall in Connecticut. While details on the mall’s next chapter are limited, AIC Economics Professor John Rogers said there’s a chance this could be the case for Hampshire Mall too.

Former Bruins winger dead at 75 

Earlier today, the NHL Alumni Association announced the passing of former player Dave Forbes at 75. Forbes, born in Montreal in 1948, spent six seasons in the National Hockey League from 1973-1979. After spending four years playing for American International College, Forbes signed as a free agent with the Boston Bruins before the 1973-74 NHL season, making his professional debut on October 10, 1973.

NCAA men’s hockey in Springfield draws in $1.2M in spending

Watch parties and events planned to mark the solar eclipse 

With The Great American Eclipse just a few days away, watch parties are in the works as people across western Massachusetts are gearing up for the big event. In Springfield, American International College is holding a watch party out on the quad on the day of the eclipse. Giavanna Worthy, AIC’s associate director for student engagement, told Western Mass News that hosting a watch party right on campus was a no-brainer for them.

The Utah Grizzlies have signed forward Blake Wells. Wells started his college career at UMass-Lowell and in four seasons from 2019-2023, he scored seven goals and eleven assists. Concerns over long-term inflation: Still above Federal Reserve’s 2% goal 

Inflation has eased over the past year but remains elevated at 2.4%, and some economists caution that it may be hard to reach the 2% goal anytime soon. A local economic and finance expert says there are sectors where people pay more. “More months of relatively stable prices, but the key will be a trend there, and then that will allow them to cut some of those interest rates, which are keeping mortgage, car loans, and credit card debt at a high cost,” said John Rogers, Economics and Finance Professor at AIC.

I recently had a conversation with the most prolific scorer in Amarillo hockey history, Logan Jenuwine, as part of the 2018-19 Amarillo Bulls. Jenuwine’s scoring records still holds to this very day and some say his 60-goal season will never be eclipsed. Jenuwine is a senior playing Division I college hockey at American International College in Springfield, Mass.

There are about 6 million cases of pink eye in the U.S. each year. In an eye with pink eye, the white part looks light pink to reddish and your eyelids become puffy or droopy. FAFSA changes causing concerns for students, delays for colleges 

Colleges will be waiting longer than usual to receive financial aid data because the Department of Education revamped the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as FAFSA, last year. “The FAFSA was supposed to be open by January 1. It was open a couple of hours in December, but with that rollout, there have been several hiccups that families have faced with either the site being down or going into the site and being able to complete part of it, waiting to get an email, not being able to complete the rest of the FAFSA,” said Richard O’Connor, director of financial aid at American International College.

According to the Labor Department, non-farm payrolls expanded by 353,000 jobs for the month. The report could raise questions though, about how soon the Federal Reserve will be able to lower interest rates. “I think the main thing is to keep an eye on those rates,” says John Rogers, Economics and Finance Professor at AIC. “

Dick Waterman, a steward, and chronicler of the blues, dies at 88 

Dick Waterman, who helped safeguard a rugged pillar of American music, the blues, as a writer, photographer, manager, and promoter, rekindling the careers of revered singers and guitarists like Son House and shepherding the work of younger musicians such as Bonnie Raitt, died Jan. 26 at an assisted-living center in Oxford, Miss. He was 88. Brick Schools Transportation Director Pete Morris Mourned 

Brick Township NJ school buses were adorned with black ribbons on Monday as the school district joined family and friends in mourning Peter Morris, the director of transportation for the Brick Township Schools, who died Saturday evening at 56. For Amy Cohen, the chance to represent her home country on an international stage was something she never would have dreamed of just a couple of years ago. Jim Dadoly is now 92 and served in the Korean Conflict…After high school, Jim went on to study biology at American International College. On Dec. 11, the American International College baseball team delivered 4,000 pounds of food and $500 worth of diapers, collected through their annual Homerun 4 the Hungry food drive, to Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen in Chicopee and Square One in Springfield. The team is grateful to the Springfield Symphony Orchestra for hosting a donation table at its Holiday Pops concert and to Peter Pan Bus Lines for providing transportation for the food deliveries.

The San Diego Gulls have announced that the American Hockey League (AHL) club has signed forward Michal Stinil to a professional tryout (PTO). The 5-11, 194-pound forward appeared in 18 career NCAA games with American International College from 2020-22, helping AIC win the Atlantic Hockey Association championship in 2020-21.

Andrew Bumpus of Carver was appointed as a full-time police officer by the Rochester Select Board on Monday, Nov. 6. According to Rochester Police Chief Robert Small, Bumpus attended American International College where he was part of the campus police department. Bumpus also completed police academy training during his time in school.

John Gibbons, the First Black United States Marshal of Massachusetts, Passes Away 

John Gibbons, the first African American United States Marshal of Massachusetts, has passed away. Gibbons was a graduate of American International College (AIC) and went on to have an illustrious career in law enforcement. He received his undergraduate degree from the institution in 1977, a Master of Education in 1986, and was bestowed with an honorary doctorate in 2011. While attending AIC, he was an exceptional football player for the school’s team the Yellowjackets, and was inducted into their Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022.

Area colleges address COVID-19 vaccine booster requirements for the spring semester
