Chipman Golf Tournament History

As shared by Tim Chipman, brother to Bob Chipman.

The AIC Alumni / Bob Chipman Memorial Golf Tournament dates back to 1977. At that time, I was serving as an Officer in the AIC Alumni Association. The Association was looking to introduce new activities to increase alumni participation in college-sponsored events. An Alumni Golf Tournament was proposed and subsequently implemented.

The inaugural event took place at The Orchards Golf Course in South Hadley, Massachusetts, on a Friday in early May 1977. It was an immediate success, drawing a “sold out” field of 144 golfers. The enthusiasm and overwhelming participation led to the decision to make it an annual event.

In 1978, Dr. Bill Dupont and Tom Shea suggested that the tournament be named in memory of Robert W. Chipman, AIC Class of 1971. The idea was presented to College President Courniotes, who agreed. In a formal ceremony at the Butova Gymnasium Lobby, the tournament was officially dedicated in Bob Chipman’s memory. It was also established that all proceeds from the event would go to the Robert W. Chipman Memorial Scholarship Fund.

For 47 years, the tournament has continued to thrive. Many individuals have contributed to the ongoing success, both past and present. Special acknowledgment must be given to several key figures. Our parents, Walter and Evangeline Chipman, were deeply honored by AIC’s commitment to recognizing Bob and remained steadfast supporters of the tournament and the scholarship fund. Bob Brennan (AIC ‘71), a teammate and friend of Bob from the golf team, joined the tournament committee in 1978 and has been an invaluable supporter, both financially and emotionally, especially during challenging times. Steve Nemphos, former President of the AIC Varsity Club, played a crucial role in revitalizing the event, recruiting new players, and incorporating social activities before and after the tournament.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the players. Many have participated for 20, 30, or even 40 years, demonstrating unwavering support and commitment. Their dedication is both overwhelming and heartwarming, making the tournament a truly special tradition.

The Golf Tournament Committee in 1977:

  • Tom Shea – President of the Association
  • Tim Chipman – Vice President of the Association
  • Dr. Bill Dupont – President of the Alumni Varsity Club
  • Jon Hunt – AIC Alum, prominent lawyer, and Western Mass Amateur golfer
  • Allan Walker – Director of Alumni Affairs at AIC

The Bob Chipman Memorial Golf Tournament remains a cherished tradition, honoring Bob’s legacy and supporting future generations of AIC students through the scholarship fund.
