The Legacy of Bob Chipman: A Life of Perseverance and Strength
Bob Chipman’s story is one of resilience, determination, and an unwavering love for life. Born and raised in Lynn, Massachusetts, Bob was a dedicated student and a natural athlete. Whether he was on the baseball diamond, the golf course, or the hockey rink, his competitive spirit and tireless work ethic made him stand out. A proud graduate of Lynn English High School in 1966, Bob was ready to take on the next chapter of his life at American International College (AIC), where he had planned to enroll with the encouragement of his guidance counselor.
But life had a different path for Bob. That summer, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease, a formidable opponent that forced him to delay his college dreams. For a year, he endured grueling radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Yet, in the fall of 1967, with a determination that defined his character, Bob was declared in remission and enrolled at AIC. There, he flourished—not only as a student, but as a leader. He played on the hockey and golf teams, captaining the latter, and became an active member of the Theta Chi fraternity. It was also at AIC where he met the love of his life, Pamela Ryan, who would later become his wife.
After earning his degree in English, Bob embarked on a career in the food service industry, taking on management roles with W.T. Grant and later as a Regional Manager for York Steak House. He and Pam married in 1972, and a year later, they welcomed their daughter, Melissa Ryan Chipman—born on August 31, the same day as her father.
Bob had built a promising life, but his battle with Hodgkin’s Disease was not yet over. A few years later, the illness returned, more aggressive than before. Once again, he faced it head-on, enduring chemotherapy and radiation treatments at Tufts-New England Medical Center. Despite his unwavering courage and the loving support of his family, Bob’s fight came to an end on October 1, 1976. He was just 28 years old, leaving behind his devoted wife and their three-year-old daughter.
Though his life was cut short, Bob Chipman’s legacy continues. He was a man who never took his talents for granted, and a hard worker who earned every achievement through sheer determination. He was a loyal friend, a loving husband, and a devoted father. And while medical advancements have greatly improved survival rates for Hodgkin’s Disease today, Bob’s story reminds us of the battles that so many still face.
