I am reaching out with updates on American International College’s response to the global novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Due to the scope and severity of the outbreak, AIC is resolved to make every possible effort to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of the campus community.
For matters of contingency planning, the College has formed a COVID-19 Steering Committee to advise President Vince Maniaci on what further measures must be taken to minimize the risk to students, staff, and faculty. The Steering Committee itself will consult five established working groups devoted to a different aspect of the American College Health Association’s contingency guidelines.
As a precaution, AIC has extended spring break by one week in order to prepare for the potential need to provide distance learning through the end of the semester. Students have been advised not to return to campus until Sunday, March 22, 2020, and classes will resume the following day.
In response to the outbreak, the NCAA has cancelled all winter and spring championships. This includes the Atlantic Hockey Association conference tournament. Spring sport competition and practices, along with all other sports, have been suspended until further notice.
Additional updates regarding the College’s response to COVID-19—as well as information from the CDC, WHO, Massachusetts Department of Public Health, City of Springfield Health & Human Services, and the US State Department—can be found at aic.edu/coronavirus.
