Five Named Academic All-Conference
Five American International College student-athletes—baseball’s Matt Costanza, softball’s Alexia DiLeo, and Kemani Hume, Mitchell Byrne, and Isaac Sampson of the men’s track and field team—were named Academic All-Conference selections by the Northeast-10 Conference.
Byrne became an eight-time Academic All-Conference selection, holding a perfect 4.0 graduate GPA while studying accounting. For Hume, the honor was his fourth as he posted a 3.81 grade-point average while majoring in psychology. Sampson was selected for a second time after earning a 3.64 GPA while studying human biology. Costanza recorded a 3.95 GPA in health sciences for his first Academic All-Conference selection. DiLeo graduated in May 2018 with a 3.78 in health science.
Ortiz Makes NE10 All-Rookie Team
The American International College men’s lacrosse team’s freshman goalkeeper Jacob Ortiz was named to the 2018 Northeast-10 Conference All-Rookie Team on May 3, 2018. Ortiz played all but three minutes during the 2018 campaign, and led the nation and the conference with 248 saves, the second most in a season in program history. He set a Northeast-10 record with 28 saves in his debut against LIU Post and also recorded a 25-save effort against Saint Michael’s College.
KIPKOSGEI THREE-PEATS AS CHAMPION
Senior Leakey Kipkosgei captured his third consecutive individual title at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships. With a time of 24:22.2, Kipkosgei earned First Team All-Conference honors. Kipkosgei also took home the individual title for the third straight year to lead AIC’s men’s cross country team to a top-5 finish at the New England championship, completing the 8-kilometer course in 24:08.8.
Davis Sets New NCAA D-II Standard
AIC Junior Chelsea Davis broke the NCAA Division II field hockey record for most defensive saves with the 30th of her career in AIC’s game against Saint Michael’s College on November 6, 2018. The milestone, coupled with strong play on both ends of the field, earned Davis the Longstreth/NFHCA Division II Defensive Player of the Week honors. Davis finished the season as the team’s leader in goals (6), game-winning goals (2), points, (15), and defensive saves (11). She was also selected to the Northeast-10 All-Conference Second Team in November 2018.
women’s lacrosse breaks records
American International College women’s lacrosse players Allison Roy, Jessica Fontana, and Chelsea Davis each broke program records during the Yellow Jackets’ 2018 season. Roy achieved most turnovers forced in a single-game and in a season. She finished her redshirt sophomore campaign with 36 forced turnovers. Fontana set the all-time games played record for AIC when she took the field for her 68th game during AIC’s season finale on April 25, 2018. Davis set a new program record for ground balls during the season finale. She scooped 68 during her sophomore season to surpass the previous mark of 67.
Chapin Inducted into Section V HOF
AIC Associate Athletic Director for Compliance, Senior Woman Administrator, and Deputy Title IX Coordinator Jessica Chapin was inducted into the Section V Basketball Hall of Fame in New York. She played with Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District, and was a member of the first-team All-State in 2005 with the Class A state champion Cougars. She finished second all-time in Section V girls’ basketball in three-point field goals with 207. Chapin joined the AIC athletic department in 2014 and works directly with all 22 NCAA varsity programs, as well as men’s and women’s rugby, to ensure that the College is in compliance with all NCAA, Northeast-10, and Atlantic Hockey rules, bylaws, and regulations.
VOLLEYBALL SOARS TO NEW HEIGHTS
The AIC women’s volleyball team enjoyed a historic 2018 season, reaching the NCAA National Tournament quarterfinals, winning their second East Region title in three years. Senior setter Dolores Kopren, the Northeast-10 Setter of the year, and junior outside hitter Jana Potic, the Northeast-10 Player of the Year, were both named American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American honorable mentions. Both were also named to the All-Region teams selected by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association and the College Sports Information Directors of America as well as the AVCA. Sophomore outside hitter Andrea Serra was an AVCA All-Region honorable mention, and head coach Matt Cribbin was named East Region Coach of the Year.
Men’s Rugby Wins Championship
The American International College men’s rugby team won the 2018 Liberty Conference Championship, defeating UMass Amherst by a score of 15-10 on November 17, 2018. In spite of being undermanned due to a red card, the Yellow Jackets recorded the deciding score in the 64th minute on junior Tommy Clark’s try. Michele Magistrali scored AIC’s first points on a penalty and Filippo Banzato also recorded a try. AIC finished the 15s season with a four-game winning streak and a 6-2-1 record.
