American International College (AIC) is proud to share the inspiring journey of Femita Ayanbeku, a 2014 alumna, who is set to compete in the Paris Paralympics this August. Ayanbeku’s story is one of resilience, determination, and triumph, reflecting the core values of our institution.
Ayanbeku, who lost her right leg below the knee after a car accident when she was eleven years old, is about to become a three-time Paralympic athlete. She previously represented Team USA in the 2016 and 2020 Paralympics. Just six months after giving birth to her first child, she recently won the women’s T64 100m to earn a spot on Team USA for the 2024 games, which begin August 28. Leading up to her qualification, the sprinter skillfully balanced the demands of training and new motherhood and plans to have her baby daughter with her in Paris as she competes.
The Paralympian is also a World Championships medalist, having won a bronze in the 22m T64-Women in 2019.
Ayanbeku grew up in Boston and chose AIC for her higher education. During her time in Springfield, she overcame significant challenges related to her disability. Initially struggling with negative thoughts about her amputated limb and prosthesis, Ayanbeku says her experience at the College played a crucial role in transforming her perspective.
One pivotal moment happened during her freshman year at AIC. Ayanbeku recalls trying to explain her prosthesis to her roommate, Caitlihn, who responded with a simple, “So what?” This response became a turning point for Ayanbeku, prompting her to adopt a more accepting and positive outlook on her condition. “You know what,” she thought, “you’re right. So what? There’s nothing I can do about it. I just have to accept it.”
This newfound acceptance fueled Ayanbeku’s drive to become an advocate for body positivity and the amputee community. She founded Limb-It-Less Creations, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating awareness and support for amputees. Her influence extends beyond the running track as she frequently speaks to school and corporate groups, sharing her inspirational story and encouraging others to embrace their uniqueness.
In 2021, Ayanbeku became the first American amputee woman to be featured in a Victoria’s Secret campaign, #Undefinable Spotlight. She has also graced the runway at New York’s Fashion Week, breaking barriers and redefining beauty standards.
American International College is honored to have been a part of Ayanbeku’s journey. Her achievements and advocacy work embody the spirit of AIC. As she prepares to compete in the Paris Paralympics, we celebrate her accomplishments, extend our heartfelt support, and look forward to cheering her on as she represents her country on the world stage.
