Picture this: It’s the dawn of the 1980s hip-hop scene in Boston. The grassroots of what would become a cultural phenomenon is just starting to be recognized as an art form. Who was there to photograph some of the early days? None other than AIC’s Assistant Professor of Visual and Digital Arts John Nordell, MEd.

Fast forward thirty years, and items from that era, including two lots of previously unseen photographs – 42 images in all – were going to the highest bidder this week courtesy of the prestigious auction house Sotheby’s. Little did that talented, recent college grad know that down the road those photos would sell for nearly $7,000!

Professor Nordell’s contribution received a lot of great coverage this week by the Boston Globe, MSN Entertainment, MassLive, BusinessWest, and The Artery on WBUR Boston Public Radio.
