Sheriff David Hutchinson

Sheriff David Hutchinson came to AIC as a guest speaker for a criminal justice course taught by his friend and colleague Hampden County Sheriff Nick Cocchi. An adjunct member of the AIC faculty, Cocchi is teaching a course called “Substance Abuse and Criminal Justice.”

Hennepin County in Minnesota, is the largest county in MN, with more than one million people. It includes the city of Minneapolis. Hutchinson spoke for more than an hour, and he and Cocchi fielded questions about the Floyd killing, the subsequent protests that lasted months, and the arrest and conviction of police officer Derek Chauvin.

Hutchinson had a 15-year career in law enforcement before being elected sheriff and taking office in January 2019. A little more than 16 months later, he found himself leading a multi-agency effort to restore order in Minneapolis after the local police department lost community trust following Floyd’s death.

WWLP–22News covered Sheriff Hutchinson’s visit.
