South African Visiting Professor Collaborates with AIC’s Occupational Therapy Program

Dr. Thavanesi Gurayah, a visiting lecturer from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, recently concluded a three-week visit to American International College (AIC) to collaborate with the College’s Occupational Therapy (OT) program. Dr. Gurayah, who worked alongside Director and Associate Professor Patricia Meyers OTD, OTR/L, used her sabbatical to focus on a mental health research project to support first-year MSOT students in their transition to college life. Dr. Gurayah had worked with Assistant Professor Jennifer Nordstrom OTD, OTR/L to remotely pilot this program earlier this year in the spring semester.

The research project addressed the common challenges faced by new students, such as communication issues, time management, and stress. To better understand these needs, Dr. Gurayah conducted a focus group to identify what interventions could be most effective and with Dr. Meyers, worked with the first-year MSOT students on embedding these interventions—such as goal setting, developing self-efficiency, and managing work-life balance—into the existing academic schedule.

Reflecting on her time at AIC, Dr. Gurayah noted the value of the experience. “The lessons learned, and relationships formed during my visit will benefit both institutions,” she shared. “It’s been a very positive experience working with AIC, and I look forward to future collaborations.”

Patricia Meyers, OTD, OTR/L, echoed this sentiment, noting that the collaboration began over a year ago via Zoom. “We started working together last year, and I believe we’ll continue to do so when this project concludes,” Meyers said.

Dr. Gurayah and Meyers agree that Occupational Therapy is often misunderstood globally, with many unaware of its broad application to wellness and positive psychology. Their shared goal is to broaden students’ understanding of OT and its potential. Meyers remarked, “We work to inspire students to recognize that this profession offers so many opportunities.”

Dr. Gurayah’s visit exemplifies AIC’s commitment to fostering international collaboration and enhancing the student experience through innovative research and global perspectives.
