Residents of the Mason Square neighborhood, home to American International College, count among the estimated sixteen thousand people living in one of Springfield’s food deserts, where access to fresh produce is critically scant. In 2019, AIC sought to change that.

Over the summer, students, staff, and faculty teamed up with volunteers from C&W Services, the College’s maintenance provider, to transform a once-vacant lot at the corner of Maynard and State Streets into an abundant vegetable garden.

The Rex’s Pantry Garden’s inaugural harvest, that fall, included a variety of produce that was donated to Springfield nonprofits Square One and the Martin Luther King, Jr., Family Services Emergency Food Pantry.
