Learning at a Distance

Orienting to the Online Environment

Our program directors and faculty understand that your transition from traditional classroom learning to distance learning – online and blended – can be challenging and rewarding. To support you in the development of the requisite technology and learning skills, AIC provides a free orientation course for distance learners. Your orientation experience will introduce you to the full range of services available to both distance and traditional learners at AIC and expectations for distance learning.

Technology Expectations

AIC recommends that you have the following technology and skills before beginning distance coursework, though individual instructors may require additional tools or skills.

You can develop in these areas by working in the orientation course and alongside your program director, instructor and IT.

  • Computer with an office suite and updated browser
  • High-speed Internet connection
  • Webcam with microphone
  • Create, upload, and download a variety of document types
  • Communicate via email, discussion boards, and video chat
  • Conduct research on the Internet

Learning Expectations

Learning at a distance is very different from attending traditional classes on campus. A number of study skills will help you take advantage of the anytime-anywhere freedom afforded by distance learning.

  • Time management: Your instructor will give you guidelines, but you will be expected to plan your time to keep pace with assignments and activities. Please review the credit hour calculator to see how much time you should plan to devote to your studies.
  • Independence: Distance courses are student-centered, meaning you engage directly with content and activities and the instructor is a guide. You should feel comfortable and confident in taking the lead in exploring materials and completing work.
  • Reading and writing: Most of your online experience will be through written communication. It is essential that you feel comfortable composing discussion posts, emails, and papers and reading scholarly articles, websites, and books.

Readiness Check

You may contact the AIC Help Desk at 413.205.3402 or at ITHelpDesk@aic.edu with any questions about technology requirements for online learning. Your admissions counselor, advisor, and program director can assist with questions you may have about the content and structure of the program.
