WE CAN’T WAIT FOR THE SEMESTER TO BEGIN FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AT AIC, BUT FIRST…

There are still a few steps you need to complete before your first day of classes. Take a look at each item listed below and complete all of the necessary ones that pertain to you as soon as they’re available. Think of these steps as a road map to your future at AIC.

First Things First: Your I-20 & Visa

1) Activate your Student Email

It’s time to get connected to American International College. As an AIC student, you will receive a personalized email account and access to a student portal. Logging in to your new account opens doors to information regarding course registration, program information, news, events and so much more!

Click HERE to learn how to Get Connected

2) Prepare and gather documents needed for I-20 processing

  • Part of your agreement with AIC and the US Government is to pay your tuition. For international students, we need to verify your funding sources to ensure that your balance will be covered. This is done once per degree level. You can start gathering bank statements to support your estimated cost of attendance.
  • You will be required to submit a clear, colored copy of your passport.
  • Be prepared to sign an affidavit or financial support and an admissions agreement

3) Communication from the Office of International Life

Once your financial package is complete and the PDSO (Principal Designated School Official) has created your file, you will be receiving a welcome email with instructions on how to submit your passport, affidavit, and admissions agreement. Please check your AIC email daily and allow up to ten days, post depositing to receive this email.

4) I-20 Issuance

After receiving your deposit and Affidavit of Financial Support as well as bank statements and a signed admissions agreement, the Office of International Student Life will issue your immigration document (I-20). Your I-20 is required when applying for an F-1 student visa at an American Embassy or Consulate and for entry into the United States. This I-20 has been produced by Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and is an acknowledgement that your record is in the SEVIS system. The form includes your SEVIS ID number, which is the number in the upper right hand corner above the bar code (usually starts with an N). Please allow up to 10 days for processing.

5) Make your I-901 (SEVIS Fee) Payment

An I-901 or SEVIS Fee is used to maintain your student record and required by the US Government. It only needs to be completed once as long as you maintain active status. For many applicants, it can be completed via credit card here: fmjfee.com. This must be completed before applying for your student visa. Be sure to record your payment by keeping a copy of your receipt and send one to the Office of International Student Life.

6) Schedule an Appointment for your F1 Student Visa

Students wishing to attend American International College (AIC) must apply for a temporary stay visa known as an F-1 visa.An F-1 visa is used for the purposes of entry and reentry into the country and is issued to international students who are attending an academic program or English Language Program at a US college or university.

Applying for your F-1 Student Visa

To apply for a US visa, you will need to present the following documents at the US embassy or consulate nearest to you. You must apply for your visa well in advance of your arrival as it can take several weeks or longer to obtain the student visa.
Please be prepared to bring the following documents with you to the interview:

  • Your Form I-20
  • The SEVIS Fee receipt (I-901)
  • A copy of your financial support documents, that includes evidence (like a bank statement) that you have sufficient funds to meet the expenses of studying at AIC
  • Your Admissions acceptance letter from AIC
  • A valid passport
  • Passport-size photographs
  • Completed visa applications forms (Visa application forms are available on individual consular Web sites)
  • An application fee
  • An interview
  • There have been (and continue to be) changes in the visa application process and these changes are usually reflected on the consular Web sites. Click on the following links to find more information on:

Important Information
When applying for your F-1 student visa, pay careful attention to the following:

  • The US Department of State has instructed US consulates that they may issue an F-1 visa no more than 120 days in advance of the program start date. However, an application for an F-1 visa can be submitted more than 120 days in advance of the I-20 start date in order to accommodate long processing times. Again check the Web site of the consulate where you will apply for a visa for detailed instructions.
  • You must pay particular attention to the starting date noted on the I-20 document (Item #3), as you must enter the US by this date. If you cannot enter the US by this date, please get in touch with Office of International Student Life.
  • In addition, you may enter the US no more than 30 days prior to the starting date noted on the I-20 Form. If you try to enter the US more than 30 days before the start date on your I-20, you may not be permitted to enter the US.
  • The expiration date on your visa may not match the end date of your degree program. If your visa expires before you complete your degree program, you will apply for a new visa on your first trip outside the United States after your current visa expires.
  • If the US Consulate has any questions regarding your studies at AIC, please contact the Office for International Student Life. And if your visa application is delayed or denied for any reason, please email international.advisor@aic.edu immediately.

Visa Interview Tips
To improve your chances of being issued an F-1 Visa be prepared with the following for your interview:

  1. Academic Plans: Be ready to talk about your educational plans. Have a clear and definite plan.
  2. English: Be prepared to speak English during your interview.
  3. Homeland ties: You may be asked to discuss your ties to your home country and what you intend to do after your studies are complete.
  4. Proof of financial ability: Be prepared to prove financial ability to pay for your education and living expenses, especially for the first year. If you are bringing dependents/spouse, you will also need to demonstrate your ability to financially support them as well.
  5. Brief responses: Due to the volume of visa applications, your consular officer will likely appreciate you providing short but concise responses to the interview questions.
  6. Dependents: If you have dependents remaining in your home country while you study abroad, be prepared to discuss how they will support themselves in your absence. If you are the primary source of income, you may be requested to prove they will be financially set.
  7. Social Media: Some candidates may be asked to hand over social media handles for review. Please do not be discouraged if you are asked, and know this has become standard.

Maintaining Your Visa Status

You must:

  • Attend the school that is listed on your I-20 at the time of entry into the United States.
  • Pursue a full course of study (12 credits minimum for undergraduate).
  • Not accept off-campus employment of any kind without prior written permission from an International Student Life Advisor.
  • Chcek in with your PDSO within 24 hours of arrival to change your I-20 status from “Initial” to “Active”.

7) Arrange your Travel to AIC

  • You Have Your F-1 Visa, Your Bags Are Packed, You’re Ready To Fly…
  • Make sure you have the following original documents handy when you get to the airport-do not pack them in your suitcase:
    • Original, Current, 3- page I-20 form (The university listed on your current I-20 must be the university you are attending when you enter the United States)
    • Any previously issued I-20 forms
    • Valid F-1 visa
    • Valid passport
    • Copy of financial documents showing adequate funds to attend American International College (AIC)
    • Acceptance letter from AIC
    • Copy of your SEVIS fee receipt (paid)
    • EAD Card; Only needed if you are approved to work in the United States.
    • Completed Customs Declaration Form 6059B which will be given to you by the airline attendant during your flight or at your point of entry.

8) TIPS
When you arrive at your destination, be sure to make copies of all your documents and keep them in a safe place. It will be easier to request new ones using these copies if you misplace your originals.

Never throw away or destroy an I-20, regardless of where you are attending school.

You will need to present your documentation to the Customs and Border Protection Officer who will approve (or deny) your access to the United States. Once approved, the Officer will provide you with a CBP admission stamp on your paperwork. This is now an I-94 electronic record. In the past, travelers were issued a paper copy of their I-94. However, it is all done electronically now.

*A Form I-94 reflects the date and class of admission, and the expiration date of the period of authorized stay.

Note: Don’t be offended if you are searched at the airport. Baggage is routinely searched at airports for safety and security purposes. Officers are authorized to make baggage checks without search warrants. They may also request to search your electronic devices such as laptops, cell phones, iPads, digital cameras and any other device you may be carrying with you.

If all your documents are in order, you should not experience problems at the border. However sometimes unforeseen problems occur when entering the United States. Don’t get upset, it won’t help your situation. Stay calm and patient. If you have an issue you cannot resolve on your own, you can always email the Office for International Student Life at international.advisor@aic.edu. Worst case scenario, ask the Customs and Border Protection Officer to contact your Embassy in the United States for resolution.
