The American International College Strategic Plan

Background

In 1885, American International College was founded with the mission to provide access to higher education. It began with the Reverend Calvin E. Amaron, who persuaded other enlightened clergy to assist in the establishment of a college for French Canadian youth. Since its founding, AIC has remained true to this vision, and adapted to meet the ever-changing needs of students. The College began admitting women in 1892, becoming the first coeducational college in the region. In the early twentieth century, AIC extended its reach to the education of all immigrants and their children and, when immigration slowed in the 1920s and 1930s, expanded its scope to providing education to transform the lives of a diverse student body. Since then, AIC has continued to grow and strengthen its academic profile, adding programs that prepare students for professional success, which you as alumni have experienced firsthand. Now, in 2022, it is time for the College to take its next step forward in serving the modern student body.

Representatives of all areas of the campus community have come together to set a course for the future of the College and its mission. The result of those efforts is AIC Reimagined—AIC’s 2022-2027 Strategic Plan, embodied by the College’s renewed mission, vision, and core values:

About AIC Reimagined
AIC Reimagined values, respects, and builds upon the work conducted by the College constituents, as well as the successes the College has experienced in preparing students for personal fulfillment, professional achievement, and civic engagement with an emphasis on equity, diversity, and inclusion, as well as its academic portfolio of programs founded on the knowledge, skills, and values of the liberal arts. This plan effectively serves as the roadmap for the College over the next five years. These strategic initiatives will guide our institution towards growth and prosperity, and enhance our value proposition, allowing AIC to be a college of choice for students seeking a sense of belonging, innovative education, and profound student experiences.

Planning Process
AIC Reimagined was created through an inclusive process, which included participation and input from representatives of the faculty, staff, and leadership of all College administrative and academic units. Strategic planning exercises guided AIC colleagues with a focus on understanding how the College is perceived today, how the College ought to be seen in the future, recognizing and understanding the College’s strengths and areas of opportunity, and how these could be used as a foundation for re-envisioning AIC’s institutional focus and strategic initiatives.

Applying AIC Reimagined
Through this plan, AIC recognizes the need to be prepared and responsive to trends that impact higher education, ranging from the pandemic to student demographics, and everything in between. AIC Reimagined presents a blueprint to promote and enhance AIC’s brand as the College strives to offer current and future students a compelling value proposition. AIC’s ideals and values of Access, Opportunity, Diversity, Belonging, and Community remain intact. However, the College has a renewed mission, an aspirational vision, and a revitalized sense of pride and ownership. This institution is prepared for a new challenge, and it has the talent to continue making this a one-of-its kind institution. Through the six fundamental pillars, AIC will continue to fulfill its mission of providing access to a holistic education in an inclusive environment that propels a diverse community of learners to personal growth and professional success.
