A Homerun for the Hungry

AIC Baseball Team at Lorraine's Soup Kitchen

The AIC Men’s Baseball team delivered a ton…2,513 pounds to be exact…of canned goods to Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen & Pantry in Chicopee, MA, as part of the team’s annual Homerun for the Hungry canned food drive to benefit the nonprofit organization.

This is the third year of the donation drive. The first year, 400 pounds of food was delivered. This year’s goal was an impressive 2,500 pounds. Having met and exceeded that goal by 13 pounds, the team really did hit it out of the park and celebrated with lots of well-deserved High 5s and cheering.

Homerun for the Hungry falls under Rex’s Pantry, a food and necessities pantry at the College, founded one year ago to assist community members in need. Rex, a yellow jacket, is the AIC mascot.

The student-athletes began their drive in November with special fundraising efforts including their “Pitch In, Then Pitch a Pie” (pie in the face) events to raise funds and goods to help stock shelves at the pantry.

Peter Pan Bus Lines generously donated the coach to transport the team and the donations to the soup kitchen.

Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen and Pantry offers assistance to the local community and helps lead the fight against food insecurity in Chicopee.
