Rahway, NJ native Jeremy Antivo barely had his diploma in hand in May when he began an internship with the Spirit of Springfield, a private, non-profit corporation that produces high-quality, large-scale events in the city of Springfield. Spirit of Springfield’s mission is to promote community events and encourage civic pride.

Producing numerous major events throughout the year with a full-time staff of only four people, Spirit of Springfield President Judy Matt believes in giving interns significant responsibility and a lot of opportunity.

Jeremy was tapped to broaden Spirit of Springfield’s social media presence in an effort to reach younger audiences. During his time with Spirit of Springfield, Jeremy has also been able to present a social media plan to its board of directors and meet and interact with community leaders including the police and fire commissioners and the mayor.

What does his boss think of him? According to Judy Matt, Jeremy is “really a superstar!”

Senior Alexander Clark of Mashpee, MA was afforded the opportunity to intern with the Hampden County District Attorney’s office and is gaining valuable real-life experience while being mentored by AIC alumnus Antonio Simmons, director of community safety and outreach.

At a press conference this summer, Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni announced the formation of the Hampden County Addiction Task-force (HCAT), a collaboration of community resources including local and state law enforcement personnel, health care institutions, service providers, schools and community coalitions whose goal is to focus on a county-wide approach to address drug addition, overdose and prevention.

HCAT lists five primary objectives including the development of consistent messaging for addiction and addiction related issues. Alex was tasked with creating a social media plan in support of HCAT’s efforts.

Alex’s supervisor and mentor, Antonio “Tony” Simmons is impressed with his contributions to the team, “Alex gives HCAT that input needed from a youth’s perspective. His knowledge of social media will be very helpful. Alex has very good communication and leadership skills that will be an asset to the team. I am impressed with his drive and determination to get involved and make a difference.”

When Alex returns to the AIC campus for his senior year, community outreach and all things politics will continue to be priorities as they been since beginning his college career. To find out what other endeavors Alex is involved in, including the special honor of being only one of 137 students selected nationally to participate in College Debate 2016 in Los Angeles this September, please click on the link below.
